One year ago today the Portland Trail Blazers advanced to the franchise's first Western Conference Finals since 2000 after defeating the Denver Nuggets 100-96 in Game 7.  To commemorate the occasion, Jason Quick of The Athletic published an oral history of the series-clinching victory, including how Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla called the Blazers "fake tough guys" leading up to Game 7. Kiszla claimed the Blazers were trying to bully the Nuggets, citing the comments of Seth Curry after Game 6, who got poked in the eye by Will Barton during the fourth quarter: "They got some sassy dudes over there...front-runners." Kiszla also took offense to Evan Turner flipping the bird towards the Nuggets bench after Michael Porter Jr. did the same to the Trail Blazers bench after Game 5. When Kevin Pitt recalls the proudest day of his life, he's reminded of the time his father was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. In 1994, Romain Pitt became the first Black lawyer in Canada from a private practice to become a Superior Court judge. He held that position until 2010. Pitt helped found the Caribana festival, now known as the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, as well as the Black Business and Professional Association. Pitt died on April 29 after a fall in his home. He was 84. "His instincts really led him to serve the little person," Kevin told the Star. "He really stood up for the rights of the disadvantaged." Pitt was born in the West Indies in Grenville, Grenada in 1934 and moved to Toronto at 19 after his father died a few years prior. Two new grants will make it possible for the Blazer Kitchen to continue serving Blazers during the coronavirus crisis — and expand that service to others in the Birmingham community. Blazer Kitchen provides pre-packed bags via drive-thru at Medical Towers noon-6 p.m. Wednesdays and the Hill Student Center 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays; it has provided more than 12,600 meals since March 18. The first grant, which totals $1,751, is Blazer Kitchen's share of a $100 million gift to nonprofit organization Feeding America from Amazon Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, distributed to Blazer Kitchen by the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, the area's Feeding America affiliate.
